How it works
01What goes into a bathroom price?
According to a February 2026 article by bathroom retailer X²O on the Belgian building platform Bouwinfo, a mid-range bathroom (8 to 9 m²) costs €9,000 to €15,000. A basic bathroom of the same size costs €7,000 to €10,000, a luxury one from €18,000. Those amounts cover materials and basic fitting on the pipes that are already there.
Most of the money goes to what counts per item: shower, toilet, washbasin, taps, drainage and electrics. They cost almost the same in a small bathroom as in a large one; the square metres mainly weigh on the tiling and the waterproofing. That is why a small bathroom costs more per m². For 4 to 6 m² X²O quotes €3,500 to €6,000 in basic and €5,000 to €8,000 in mid-range.
02What comes on top in a renovation?
A renovation starts with demolition and ends with a waterproof, tiled room. Outside the guide prices X²O counts €500 to €1,500 to remove the old bathroom, €1,000 to €2,500 to move pipes or adapt the electrics, €1,000 to €3,000 for a ventilation system and about €1,500 for underfloor heating. The article advises a reserve of 10 to 20 per cent for what sits behind the old tiles.
Added up, a mid-range bathroom of 8 to 9 m² with demolition and new pipework comes to €10,500 to €19,000. With figures from the renovation platform Setle (February 2025), KBC puts a modest bathroom at €5,573 to €7,651 and a luxury one at €19,428 to €27,653, demolition included. Both sources are commercial: X²O sells bathrooms, KBC sells renovation loans. These are guide prices, not rates.
03How to read the result
The calculator works with the floor area, the finish and the options you choose. It does not know your bathroom: whether the drain can stay where it is, whether there is damp in the walls, whether the floor has to come up for new pipes. Read the result as a first indication and set it next to the sector figures above. A price for your own bathroom only follows a site visit.
For the prices per size, the VAT rule and a worked example for a Ghent bathroom, read the guide on bathroom renovation cost in Belgium.
04VAT and grants on a bathroom
In a home older than 10 years, sanitary ware, fixed bathroom units and tiling are at 6% VAT, if the contractor supplies the materials and invoices them together with the work. Anything you buy yourself is at 21%. There is no Mijn VerbouwPremie for the bathroom itself any more: interior renovation was dropped on 1 July 2025. The grant check shows what is still possible for your work.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Belgium?
According to X²O on Bouwinfo, a mid-range bathroom (8 to 9 m²) costs €9,000 to €15,000, before demolition and new pipework. With those included, it comes to €10,500 to €19,000. KBC puts a modest bathroom at €5,573 to €7,651.
How accurate is a bathroom renovation cost calculator?
It is a first indication based on floor area, finish and options. Damp, pipes that have to move or a floor that has to come up are things a calculator cannot see; they show up on a site visit.
What does it cost to renovate a small bathroom?
For a bathroom of 4 to 6 m² X²O quotes €3,500 to €6,000 in basic and €5,000 to €8,000 in mid-range. Demolition (€500 to €1,500) and pipework (€1,000 to €2,500) come on top.
How much contingency should I plan for a bathroom renovation?
X²O advises 10 to 20 per cent of the budget. In an older home there is often damp or a pipe past its life behind the tiles.
